During the final two sessions of the course we will be discussing topics that are suggested and voted on by you. Over the next few weeks, I would like you to suggest topics by commenting on this post. Feel free to suggest anything healthcare related. After a few weeks I will put the suggestions to a vote right here on the blog. The top 2 topics will be used. Feel free to start making suggestions.

Patient confidentiality scenarios and how to handle them appropriately.
Example: Mother & 16 y/o daughter come to pick up an Rx for the daughter for amoxicillin.
Possible Scenario's:
1) Daughter is on Oral Contraceptives. How to you convey this drug-drug interaction secretly & effectively without breaking HIPAA rights.
2) Mother states they are picking up the daughters amoxicillin. You notice a 2nd Rx in the bin for Ortho-TriCyclen. Do you mention the 2nd Rx if they don't ask about it?
Maybe have a topic involving working with other health care professionals when there are disagreements or power/control issues... ex. Doctor's, Nurses.
An example would be a doctor telling the pharmacist he is just there to put pills in a bottle and not to question the doctor's authority.
What is everyone's take on the future of pharmaceutical care and medication therapy management?
Does anyone think it will become a large part of the profession of pharmacy in the future.... or does anyone think that these ideas will fizzle out because of a possible interference with physicians responsibilities?
Suggestion for future topic:
what about the idea that we should take the time to counsel patients, according to what our school is advocating us to do, when in reality, people have no time or that they are apathetic to counseling and businesses always promote profit making goals first before anything else, in order to stay in business. How should we reconcile the two divergent viewpoints so that we can please everybody?

Maybe we can talk about prescription volume per pharmacist and how that leads to medication error. Is that the biggest contributor or should we focus on other factors as well, like new technology and increasing the number of technicians?
With the elections right around the corner and several mentions of healthcare reform, how about a discussion on national healthcare plans or socialized medicine and how it may affect pharmacists?
I propose discussing modalities of making the pharmacist farther from clerical tasks and closer to patients. Tech-check-tech, automation and finding innovative ways of managing workflows that let the pharmacist have a higher impact on the outcomes of therapy.In other words, discuss creative ways to wake the pharmacy profession up from a long sleep and get down to business, find new sources of revenue and enhance the status and the credibility of the pharmacist.
I would like to discuss the changing roles of the pharmacy technician. Tech-check-tech programs and their effectiveness. How will the changing roles of pharmacy technicians lead to better patient outcomes and better pharmaceutical care?
